FRANKLIN MINT MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS DOLLHOUSE
This item has been on display in the world renowned House of Broel Dollhouse Museum that is a wonderland of intricate treasures that have to be seen to be believed. It is a very fine piece that is in mint condition because after its creation it has only been on display and never handled.
My husband frequently bought me Franklin Mint dolls for my birthdays, our anniversaries and other special occasions. But I am a dollhouse person more than a doll person - so when I saw the brochure for a Franklin Mint Dollhouse I let him know that’s what I wanted for Christmas. I was so elated when I found out that he did buy it for me! All of the other houses in my collection are built out of wood so this resin house was quite a bit different for me and the furnishings that went with the house were not of the type that I normally use. But I loved my new house and decided to give it my own interpretation using some of the pieces that came with the house and adding many others that I felt were complementary.
In the first floor living room I added a rocker that has a Christmas quilt thrown over it. I trimmed the tree with Mardi Gras beads, added a mom decorating Christmas presents, a dad trimming the tree and added many more presents and accessories. I hung Christmas stockings on the fireplace and put milk and cookies on a table for Santa. The magazine rack holds copies of the Saturday Evening Post and other appropriate publications.
In the hall office on the right hand side of the first floor I added pictures of ships, a lamp, other accessories and a Christmas wastebasket.
On the second floor I set the dining room just like my grandmother’s in Detroit as I remember as a small child. The settings on the table are just perfect - complete with a turkey in the center and Christmas decorated candlesticks. And just like Granny had - there is a fern in the lace curtained window alcove. To the left I added a smaller table with a punch bowl on the top shelf and a cherry pie on the bottom shelf. To the right I added another smaller table with lemonade and cookies. On the fireplace I added a gingerbread house and red and green napkins.
In the second floor hallway I added a cuckoo clock, Christmas décor and paintings. Toward the back of the hallway I added a table with a poinsettia arrangement on the top shelf and a Santa on the bottom shelf. On the stairs there is a Raggedy Ann doll.
On the third floor master bedroom a visiting aunt has dozed off while reading the Saturday Evening Post. I added perfume bottles and pictures to the dressing table on the left and added a dresser on the right that is overflowing with all sorts of fancy things. On the top I added decorative bottles, toiletries, gloves, a purse and a Dresden doll.
On the right hand side the bathroom features a footed tub, toilet sink, other bath accessories and a floral bathrobe. I had always wanted to use the wallpaper that I put on the fourth floor children’s bedroom. I had saved it for years and here was my opportunity to finally show it off in style. On the boys side of the room on the left I added an adorable newspaper boy going off to deliver his morning papers. His desk has a drum on it and he is surrounded by a I plane, truck and hobby horse. On the right hand side I added a pretty little girl in pink and white and surrounded her with a miniature castle, doll carriage with a doll and a “Jack in the Box”. On the wall above I added a shelf that displays two dolls. At the back of the room a dollhouse sits on the center table. The lace curtains and oriental carpets that I added throughout the whole home add warmth and charm to make this a Christmas House that Norman Rockwell would have been proud to paint.
